1937. This was the era when you rolled our own smokes, every kitchen had an ice-chest and blokes carried their bottles of beer in their Gladstone bags. It's a joyful portrait of the summer of the first doll, in which a chance encounter brings Olive and Nancy, Roo and Barney, into the Carlton terrace owned by Olive's mother Emma to begin a seventeen year journey of seasonal love and argument.
Olive and Nancy, barmaids in Carlton, wait every year for their lovers, cane-cutters, to return for the "off-season". As the years go on, their resistance to change threatens their idyllic lifestyle, and leads them to wonder where they are headed.
